Sovereignty of God

Sovereignty means unlimited power and authority. Whereas, the Bible presents much about the Sovereignty of God, yet there is no attempt in scripture to prove God's existence. The very first words in all scripture begins, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). Since God is the divine author of the Bible (All scripture is "breathed out" by God (2 Timothy 3:16), everything we need to know about Him is revealed in His Word - nothing more, nothing less.

One of the Hebrew names or titles for God is "El Elyon," meaning, "God Most High." The patriach Abram (God later changed his name to Abraham), expressed God's sovereignty this way, "I have lifted up my hand to the LORD, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth" (Genesis 14:22). Possessor means creator. God is all-powerful, He knows all things, He is everywhere. God's all-seeing eye and inescapable presence prompted King David to say, "If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me and your right hand shall hold me" (Psalm 139 9-10).

Moses prayed, "LORD, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God" (Psalm 90:1-2). Moses is acknowledging the eternality of the Sovereign God, which means God is "timeless" having neither beginning nor end. Also, David said of God, "Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom and your dominion endures throughout all generations" (Psalm 145:13).

God says of Himself. "Before Me there was no God formed, nor shall there be any after Me. I am the LORD and besides Me there is savior" (Isaiah 43:10-11). Moses asked God what he should say to the children if Israel if they asked who sent him to them. God replied, "I AM WHO I AM." Say to the people of Israel, "I AM has sent me to you." (Exodus 3:13-14). God shows that He is self-existent and no one can contain Him.

As Sovereign, nothing is beyond God's awareness or control. Everything is subject to Him, and "He works all things according to the counsel of His will" (Ephesians 1:11). The Apostle Paul wrote, "Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways: (Romans 11:33). The Bible says, "The LORD has prepared His throne in the heavens, and His kingdom rules over all" (Psalm 103:19). Acts 17:24 also tells us, "The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of Heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is He served by human hands" (Paul's sermon to the Athenians). God's sovereignty is essentially expressed throughout His Word. Oh, what a mighty God we serve!
